Solid background color
Change background color of image files to a plain backdrop
Give a portrait, product or cutout a simple backdrop without inventing a new scene. The change background color of image workflow separates the main subject and places a flat color behind it. Start with white for a clean comparison, or choose a shade that fits the page where the image will appear. The quality of the subject edge matters as much as the background color.
Your original stays separate · Review the price before generating

Before you start
To change background color of image files, open your photo, choose a solid background color and inspect the separated subject. This cutout-and-color operation costs 4 credits. It creates a flat backdrop; a room, landscape, textured surface or newly generated shadow belongs to the generated background workflow.
Choose a plain field of color
A solid backdrop gives a picture a defined visual boundary. A dark product can stand apart from a pale page; a portrait can use the same background family as a team directory. The source subject still carries the lighting and perspective of its original photograph, so pick a color that works with that existing appearance.
Flat-background requests are narrower than replacing an entire setting. The tool does not need to invent windows, a floor or a horizon for a flat-color result. That simplicity is useful when the background's job is to support a subject. If the image needs to communicate a location, use the scene-changing tool instead.
Start with a photograph that shows the whole edge
Look around the outline before uploading. A hand cut off at the frame will remain cut off after the backdrop changes. Hair against a similarly colored wall, a clear bottle and a white shirt against bright sunlight can all make separation harder to assess. Choose another source if one gives a clearer view of the subject.
JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC files are accepted up to 20MB each. Prefer the original photograph to a screenshot with messaging-app compression. The goal is to preserve the information that already exists along the edge, not to ask a flat-color operation to reconstruct missing strands, sleeves or glass reflections.

Choose the intended delivery color early, then evaluate the edge against it. An outline that looks fine on white may show a pale fringe on dark blue.
Open the intended source
Select the photograph you want to use. If the project contains several versions, confirm that you are changing the background of the correct one before submitting.
Choose the solid color
Use the background color control for a plain fill. Keep the request focused on the main subject and the backdrop; a description of a studio scene or dramatic lighting introduces a different generation task.
Inspect the separation
Check the outside outline and the openings inside it, including gaps under arms, between handles and beside straps. Review the result on the chosen color before exporting.
Pick contrast for the subject, then for the page
Start with the edge of the subject. A cream sweater on ivory can be pleasant at full size but hard to read in a small profile circle. A navy bag on black may lose its straps. Compare a light and a darker background to see which keeps the silhouette legible without overwhelming the photograph.
Next consider where the image will sit. A web page's white background can make an off-white export look like a visible rectangle. That may be intentional; if you need the image to blend into several layouts, transparency could be a better deliverable. Change background color of image choices should follow the final placement rather than an isolated preview.
| Placement | Useful starting point | Inspect before delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Product card | Light neutral color | Pale edges and small hardware |
| Profile image | Color separated from clothing | Hairline and shoulder visibility |
| Dark web page | A background tested on that page | Light fringes around the subject |
| Several unknown layouts | Transparent PNG or WebP | Edge behavior on both light and dark surfaces |
Hair, handles and transparent objects need closer review
The background exists inside a subject's silhouette as well as outside it. A mug handle encloses a small opening. A bicycle has gaps between spokes. A person may have space between an arm and the body. After you change background color of image content, inspect those holes for leftovers from the original scene.
Fine hair can contain partly transparent pixels. A hard-looking border, clipped strands or a bright halo may become more obvious against a contrasting fill. Glass presents another problem: the old scene may still be visible through the object. A solid backdrop cannot guarantee a physically correct reconstruction of transparency and reflections. For difficult products, use a source photographed on a suitable simple background.
Decide whether the subject needs a floor
A cutout on a flat color can look appropriate in a graphic layout, but it may appear to float if it is meant to sit on a surface. The original floor shadow might have belonged to the removed background. A plain fill alone does not establish a new floor plane, contact shadow or studio sweep.
Illustrative request, not a tested result: "Keep the backpack and replace the background with plain light gray." That is a clear solid-color job. Adding "resting on a gray floor with a soft shadow" asks for scene content as well. Use the generated background changer for that result, then check the contact point beneath the bag and whether the shadow agrees with its existing lighting.
Know which operation you are submitting
The subject cutout, solid-background and background-blur routes each cost 4 credits. A request for a generated setting follows image-generation pricing: 10 credits for 1K, 20 for 2K or 30 for 4K. Check the displayed task price when your request combines several changes.
Basic cropping, rotation, resizing and format export are free guest tools. Account-backed tasks and private uploads have a different lifecycle from those local edits. Keep a downloaded source you can return to. Internal retries do not create another charge, while a new variation you submit is a separate task. Change background color of image work is easier to budget when you choose the destination color before requesting several alternatives.
Export for the background you actually need
PNG, JPG and WebP can all show a completed solid backdrop. Use a transparent PNG or WebP if the final designer should be able to place the subject on another background. JPG cannot carry transparency; this editor uses white where transparent areas are flattened into a JPG.
Open the downloaded file once, preferably against the intended page or design. Check that the color surrounds every part of the subject and that the crop gives enough breathing room. If you only need a smaller image for a card, resize after accepting the edge. The related background comparison guide explains when to use a plain color, remove the backdrop entirely or generate a new environment.
Example request
Keep the main subject and replace the background with a plain warm beige. Preserve the subject's visible edges.
Adapt the subject and details to your image. This is a starting instruction, not a sample result.
Questions about this edit
Can I change background color of image files to pure white?
Choose white as the solid background and check the subject boundary afterward. Pale clothing, reflective edges and soft hair may be difficult to judge on white alone. Compare the edge on another color too, then export the version you intend to use.
Does a solid background automatically include a shadow?
A flat fill does not promise a new natural-looking shadow. If the subject needs to sit on a surface, describe that scene in the generated background tool. Inspect the contact shadow and light direction in that separate result.
Will changing the backdrop recolor the subject?
The task is to preserve the subject while replacing what surrounds it. Check fine edges and transparent areas because separation can include or exclude the wrong pixels. Reflections of the original background may remain on glass or polished metal.
Should I export a color background or transparency?
Export the color if the layout is settled and you want that complete picture. Choose PNG or WebP transparency for reuse across different layouts. Keep a separate original so the finished backdrop does not become your only available source.
